Del Potro has wrist injury, pulls out of Kooyong

Juan Martin Del Potro has a wrist injury that has forced him out of the Kooyong exhibition tournament just days before the start of the Australian Open.

Del Potro was scheduled to play a Friday semifinal against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, but informed tournament director Colin Stubs that he would not be able to play.

It was not immediately clear how serious the injury was, or whether it would threaten his participation in the Australian Open, which begins Monday.

In October at the Shanghai Masters, he retired in the second round against Jurgen Melzer because of right wrist tendinitis. Del Potro had already qualified for the season-ending championship in London, where he lost to Nikolay Davydenko in the November final.

Juan Martin Del Potro no se presentó a jugar el partido ante el francés Tsonga, por la semifinal del torneo de exhibición de Kooyong. El primer Grand Slam del año, comienza dentro de cuatro días.

Juan Martín del Potro, número 4 del ránking mundial, se retiró del torneo de exhibición de Kooyong Classic por una lesión y está en duda su participación para el Abierto de Australia, para el que ya está descartado David Nalbandian.

El tandilense, quien había derrotado al croata Ivan Ljubicic por un doble 6-3, no pudo salir a la cancha para enfrentar en semifinales al francés Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

Los organizadores confirmaron que Del Potro abandonó por una lesión en la muñeca, sin que se dieran mayores precisiones sobre la gravedad de la molestia.

Juan Martin Del Potro wins at at Kooyong Classic 2010

Juan Martin del Potro scored a 6-3 6-3 victory over Ivan Ljubicic at the Kooyong Classic.

This is Del Potro’s only warm up tennis tournament ahead of the 2010 Australian Open.

Del Potro and Ljubicic faced blustery conditions at the Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club but the Argentine was in fine touch and was too much for the Croat.

“The weather conditions were tough, a lot of wind,” Del Potro said. “I returned very good, I served very good so that’s important for this kind of match, this kind of surface. It’s a good victory in the beginning of the season, of course.”

Juan Martin started the match by breaking Ljubicic’s serve and then cracked two forehand winners to set up two set points at 5-3. He then claimed the set when his opponent double-faulted.

Ljubicic raised his game after conceding an early break in the second, but fluffed a chance to break back later and eventually succumbed after saving three match points.

Ljubicic was upbeat about the loss despite spending most of the time between points frowning with his head bowed.

“It wasn’t all that bad actually. Probably the most disappointing thing is that I didn’t feel bad at all and I still lost 6-3 6-3,” he said.

Del Potro vencio a Ljubicic en la exhibicion de Kooyong Classic 2010

Juan Martín Del Potro venció a Ivan Ljubicic63 63, en el comienzo del torneo exhibición de Kooyong, Melbourne, Australia.

El argentino demostró un buen nivel, con un trabajo sólido desde fondo de cancha. Puso especial énfasis en su potente drive, ante un adversario que tiene un muy buen servicio, en este torneo que sirve de preparación para el Abierto australiano, primer Grand Slam del año.

Del Potro quebró dos veces el saque del croata. Lo hizo en el primer game del primer set y en el cuarto juego del segundo, lo que le sirvió para llevarse el encuentro sin mayores sobresaltos.

En la segunda ronda el número cuatro del ranking se medirá ante el vencedor del duelo entre el sueco Robin Soderling (8) y el francés Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (10). Por el otro sector del cuadro se medirán el serbio Novak Djokovic (3) ante el alemán Tommy Haas (18), y el chileno Fernando González (11) frente al español Fernando Verdasco (9).
