Initiatives for 2010 include: * A consumer waste recycling program for plastic and cans and an operational recycling program for cardboard and glass cover 100% of the grounds of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. * Following the US Open, approximately 20000 Wilson tennis ball cans are recycled. The 60000 Wilson tennis balls used during the US Open are reused for NTC programming and then donated to community/youth programs. * There will be 225000 US Open souvenir-style shopping bags designed for multiple uses with a “recycle and reuse” message printed on the bottom, and a reusable tote bag will be available at merchandise stands for . * 2.4 million napkins in the general concessions area are composed of 90 percent post-consumer waste, and all US Open-related printed materials (US Open program), marketing collateral, tickets and the Daily Drawsheet, among others) are composed of at least 30 percent post-consumer waste.

US Open 2010: Todos extranan a Del Potro

La memoria activa todos sus resortes cada vez que uno atraviesa la puerta de entrada del espectacular Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, la sede del US Open. Mucho más si se encuentra, enseguida, con El Court de los Campeones, un lugar que homenajea a todos los que alzaron el trofeo dorado desde aquel lejanísimo 1881, cuando el primer ganador fue un tal Richard Sears (la primera mujer, en 1887, resultó Ellen Hansell). Los ilustres nombres de los campeones están inscriptos en cuatro amplias placas de bronce. Y en la última, detrás del nombre de Roger Federer que se repite cinco veces (de 2004 a 2008), aparece él, Juan Martín Del Potro, y el año de su todavía fresca hazaña ante el mismísimo y admirado Federer: 2009. Un pibe entre los monstruos. Un pibe en la historia inmensa del Abierto de los Estados Unidos.

Hay que caminar unos metros más, no demasiados, para volver a toparse con una referencia al tandilense. Esta vez, con foto y todo: cara ansiosa y feliz, poquito antes de la gloria; puño derecho apretado; remera negra, vincha y muñequera amarillas. Una imagen de 2009, obviamente, sostenida en lo alto de unos caños blancos que también reflejan a los vencedores del US Open. Enfrente suyo está Kim Clijsters; detrás, cuándo no, Federer. Santiago, 18 años, argentino residente en Nueva York, camiseta celeste y blanca sobre su piel, levanta la pequeña máquina digital y se lleva consigo la foto de Del Potro. “Qué lástima que no pudo venir; yo tenía esperanzas de que se recuperase. Ahora hay que apostar todos los boletos a Nalbandian”, afirma. Y se va para ver el debut de Horacio Zeballos en el court ocho.

Lo cierto es que se extraña por estos lados al campeón que no podrá defender su corona, un hecho que ocurre por tercera vez en la era abierta: le pasó a Pete Sampras en 2003 y a Ken Rosewall en 1971. Del Potro lo anunció oficialmente el sábado 21 de agosto: “Siento realmente no poder defender mi título. Ganar en Nueva York ha sido mi mayor logro y recuerdo en el tenis. Tengo muchos deseos de volver a Nueva York en 2011”. La recuperación de su operación en la muñeca derecha le quitó las ilusiones de pisar hoy el cemento celeste de Flushing Meadows.

“Claro que se lo echa de menos a Del Potro. El año pasado demostró que es un gran campeón: ganó cuando pocos creían en él. Y le ganó a Federer, que acá era imbatible. Esperamos que pueda regresar pronto; acá lo recibiremos con los brazos abiertos”, dice a Clarín J. Fred Sidhu, asistente del área de Comunicaciones de la organización. Más que valioso es el análisis del enviado especial de La Gazzetta dello Sport, el italiano Vincenzo Martucci, un experimentado conocedor del circuito: “El torneo pierde una gran atracción sin Del Potro. A excepción de Nadal, Juan Martín es el rival más peligroso para Federer porque tiene calidad y potencia. En los torneos de Grand Slam, que son los que le interesan a Roger, Del Potro es uno de los poquitos que lo ha batido. Hay un indicio muy fuerte sobre lo que representa Del Potro: Federer siempre habla muy bien de él sin que nadie se lo pregunte. También es una pena para la gente porque no hay otro gran sudamericano. Está Nalbandian, es cierto, pero Juan Martín es hasta más simpático”. De cara al futuro, Martucci aventura: “Creo que va a volver muy bien. Es muy joven y eligió la mejor táctica para recuperarse: parar casi un año”.
